These days search engines aren’t only indexing your website headers or call outs on your site. Nor are they only high-ranking website copy that is stuffed with a million too many SEO keywords.
Here’s how to get started on your SEO happy place when it comes to keyword research and the creative content on your site.
First, you need to target your keywords. These are the search terms and descriptive words that potential customers might use to find you and your competitors.
Do a search of your industry and location (if applicable) and see what comes up. When I search “Gaming stores Portland” after the first three Yelp entries I see that the next two entries are for the same store. They’ve got a blog, and that means their content is fresh - that’s a biggie when it comes to SEO. They use their city and state to boost their SEO along with gaming keywords for their latest releases. Good job, number one ranking Portland gaming store.
Second, make a list of all the iterations of your keywords and divide them into categories: target audience, locations, products, brands, competitors, synonyms of all the keywords you’ve listed, and finally, words that Google is relating to your keywords.
If you’re just getting started on your website or if you’re looking for an SEO refresh, remember that you’re creating content that is also for real people to read. Keep it interesting. Keep it simple. And keep it SEO-friendly by doing your SEO keyword research before you start. Most important, don’t bore the crap out of everyone.
